I’ve found crafts in Santa Fe to be of the highest esthetic. Like my friend who creates unique denim jackets, the craftsmanship is exceptional. Her pieces are whimsical and friendly.

This week I hosted a trunk show to showcase her work and mine here in Santa Fe New Mexico. Mimi May always has new pieces I’ve not seen. The jewelry I have seen continue to amaze me. My short video does not do justice to the beauty in her assemblages.

This fall she and I were on a supply hunting trip when we came across a collector selling family heirlooms out of his garage. For a song he sold me a jar of old turquoise beads and a Zuni Heishi necklace. Friends challenged me on the authenticity of the turquoise which brought me to do quite a bit of research. Understanding what is available now mines have been stripped, where the oldest piece of turquoise was found and how to see turquoise with fresh eyes. More on how to identify real turquoise.
